Bubble Soccer 2 (2)Hillcrest Transitional Housing hosted their Hillcrest Hero Bubble Soccer Tournament on April 9, 2016, and our own Laura Carley was an integral part of a successful event!

Hillcrest Transitional Housing offers homeless families, singles and youth a disciplined educational program within a caring, supportive environment. They don’t focus on one-time emergency care. Their primary objective is to move clients from homelessness to self-sufficiency within 90 days by addressing the total life situation of the homeless families they serve.

Laura served on their board of directors for over one year and was quickly spotted as a team player, full of energy and asked to coordinate their bubble soccer tournament.  We are proud of Laura, her service to our community and contributions to Hillcrest Transitional Housing.

Mark Milosovich has grown up as part of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church in Lenexa, KS. This church holds many memories for his family. His parents were married there. Mark and his siblings were baptized there. And Mark was married to his wife Erin there.Mark As a youth, he was ingrained in the culture of the Church… the families and the weekly potlucks. As an adult, he is now helping his church raise funds for operating expenses and other community needs.

During a wave of immigration to the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Serbians formed communities in various areas of the country. This wave included all four of Mark’s great grandparents. They settled in St. Louis and California. One set of Mark’s grandparents moved to the Kansas City area in 1969 when Mark’s father was a freshman in high school. It was in 1969 that the Milosovich family became part of the St. George Serbian Orthodox Church.

Most recently Mark, his wife and parents participated in the annual Serb Fest. This year the Serb Fest raised additional funds for SafeHome, a domestic violence shelter in Overland Park, KS.

Jazzoo 2Jazzoo is the Kansas City Zoo’s largest fundraiser and one of the best parties to attend in our community! Each year they offer a new theme and in 2016, the theme was Koalas Down Under. Guests wear the craziest animal print outfits they can find, including tuxedos with lion print shorts. Local restaurants flock to this event to showcase their menu and feed the humans attending. The Kansas City Zoo offers Orangutan Outreach, a Cheetah Run and the Penguin March throughout the year, plus so much more.

Jen Barker, who is also featured in this edition as a new member of BCWM, has participated during Jazzoo over the course of seven years as a Feed the Animals volunteer. This year, Jen enjoyed her time at Jazzoo selling light-up jewelry, koala ears and flip flops to raise money to feed the zoo animals. We are proud of Jen and her service to our community and are happy to highlight her contributions to the Kansas City Zoo.

So, what do Bubble Soccer, Feeding the Animals and St. George have in common? They are philanthropy, community service and helping others, which all have similar meanings. We support our team in giving back to the community in which we live.
