Regulatory Compliance an Ongoing Process at BCWM

As industry regulations change and evolve continuously, BCWM stays informed about such changes and their implications. For instance, the relatively recent emergence of social media has necessitated regulators address how registered investment advisers should use these tools in compliance with the spirit and letter of existing regulations. Here are some of the most recent actions we have taken at BCWM to ensure we are in compliance with governing industry regulations:

  • Updated our Investment Advisor Brochure (ADV) Part II to meet the new plain English requirements set forth by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). View the document here.
  • Submitted our annually updated ADV to meet the registration requirements of the SEC. View this document here.
  • Updated our Social Media Policy to meet the new developments in the social media
  • Continue to submit our privacy policy to clients annually

To learn more about the SEC’s recent amendments to form ADV, visit this investor bulletin at the Commission’s site.

Investment Adviser Watch

BCWM now subscribes to Investment Adviser Watch (IA Watch). IA Watch is a provider of compliance news and guidance to executives in wealth management. The subscription also includes the printed and electronic version of the IA Week newsletter. The newsletter complements the website with analysis of enforcement trends and the latest regulatory actions specific to investment advisers. In addition, compliance officers are able to reach out to industry peers with questions and comments via IA Watch’s Compliance Network.

Mindy Attends IMPACT Conference

Mindy Corporon, CEO, Attended IMPACT, Schwab Institutional’s annual conference in Atlanta, GA September 23 – 26, 2008.

IMPACT, Schwab Institutional’s annual conference held exclusively for independent investment advisors, is the industry’s premier event.

World-class keynote speakers: Ted Turner, Lou Dobbs, David McCullough, Madeline Albright and Liz Ann Sonders, Chief Investment Strategist for Charles Schwab & Co.

Educational sessions: Managing Assets across the Generational Divide, Protecting Your Practice with Ongoing Compliance and Risk Management, Teach the Children Well…Helping America become financially fit and a wide array of other sessions kept Mindy running for two and a half days.

Networking opportunities: Mindy met numerous advisors from a variety of different firms. Round table sessions were held each day at lunch to discuss “best practices” at our firms.

Industry exhibits: There was an interesting golf exhibit that could have shown Mindy how well she swung the club. Note the words “could have”.

Two colleges were represented in the Industry Exhibits; Texas Tech University and Virginia Tech University. These Universities offer Financial Planning as a Bachelor of Arts degree in their undergraduate program. We are aware that Kansas State offers this program as well because our 2008 summer intern is in the KS State program.

We are hopeful to find other qualified interns from these universities in the future.
