Academic, Athletic Pursuits Remain Ideal Balance for Laura Boyer

Laura BoyerSince graduating from Marquette University and joining Boyer & Corporon Wealth Management in 2007, Laura Boyer has continued her pursuit of lifelong learning and competitive athletics.

For Laura, a Financial Planner with BCWM, the scholar-athlete combination has always been a winning formula, and continues to serve her well.

She has completed all the rigorous education, examination, experience and ethics requirements to become a Certified Financial Planner, so look for that CFP® designation behind her name soon.

Next up for Laura? Having passed the Level I Chartered Financial Analyst exam, she is preparing for the Level II CFA exam in June 2012. The CFA program, with a six-decade history of maintaining a rigorous focus on globally relevant investment knowledge, is considered the definitive standard by which to measure the competence, integrity, and dedication of serious investment professionals.

After qualifying for and passing the final exam, Level III, Laura will have achieved yet another scholarly and professional accomplishment – the CFA initials behind her name.

What about the athletic side of Laura’s life? How has this former Marquette University women’s soccer team goalkeeper and 2009 inductee into the Blue Valley Northwest Hall of Fame stayed active in her sport of choice?

Laura says most of her spare time is now dedicated to coaching soccer. She not only serves as the soccer coach for Notre Dame de Sion High School in Kansas City, Mo., but also provides goalkeeper coaching with Finesse Soccer, a personal soccer training service that helps prepare players for a higher level of competition.

Laura Boyer - Tough MudderBut it’s not all soccer all the time. Laura says one of her biggest personal accomplishments was completing the Tough Mudder 10-mile obstacle course in Beaver Creek, Co. this summer. She also starts each day at 5 a.m. with a workout at Bootcamp Fitness KC. She says it is one of the best parts of her day.

And, somehow, she’s also found time to volunteer with several community organizations. As a member of Central Exchange, Laura serves on the membership expansion committee for this women’s professional networking organization. She’s also active on the Young Professionals of Overland Park steering committee, and as service chair for the Marquette University Alumni of Kansas City Club.

Then there is the opportunity to give back: Laura is a member of the Johnson County Giving Circle, and always finds time for her favorite charity, Operation Breakthrough, where she is a member of the Grapevine group.

Mindy Corporon Among Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program Class of 2011

The Helzberg Entrepreneurial Mentoring Program (HEMP) recently announced its 2011 class of 12 mentees, Boyer & Corporon Wealth Management’s Mindy Corporon among them.

HEMP is a formal, three-year mentoring program available by application only. Up to 20 mentees per year are accepted and each is carefully matched with a mentor to foster a learning environment.

HEMP was founded in 1995 by Barnett Helzberg, Jr., former owner and President of Helzberg Diamonds, and was inspired by his 23-year mentoring relationship with Ewing Kauffman.

“The HEMP class of 2011 is comprised of some of Kansas City’s finest entrepreneurs,” Helzberg said. “We are honored to have one new mentor in addition to offer his time and expertise. I feel very fortunate to have been mentored throughout the various phases of my business career, and HEMP is one way for many of us to give back to the entrepreneurial community.”

Designed to be a three-year, facilitated program, components include a one-on-one mentoring relationship, networking opportunities with peers and veteran business owners, exposure to mentoring skills that can be applied to any professional or personal situation, business educations discussing greatest successes and lessons learned from peers and top CEOs in the community, and field trips to locations of entrepreneurial interest within the Kansas City area.

There are up to 20 events/meetings per year including an annual retreat, a participant appreciation event, field trips to locations of interest, and educational programs. Once mentors and mentees are initially matched, the formal mentoring relationship component becomes self-paced.

To be eligible for the program, entrepreneurs must meet a set of strict criteria, participate in a comprehensive self-assessment, and host the nominating committee for a site visit. The knowledge gathered from this process helps determine compatibility with the program.

Mindy joins 10 other mentees from among the Kansas City area’s top entrepreneurs. They include:

Austin Bickford, BicMedia, Inc.; Dan Cooper, ej4; Laird Goldsborough, Shaner Appraisals, Inc.; Ron Helmer, Synetic Technologies, Inc.; Deena James, Krueger and James Insurance Agency; Quentin McArthur, McQueeny Group; Mark McIntire, McIntire Management Group; Mark Simmons, Red Force Fire and Security; Cisse Spragins, Rockwell Labs, Ltd.; Delena Stout, Brookside Barkery and Bath.
